Studio Work
I love this Red Travertine which I imported from Germany a few years ago and have been waiting for the right idea to use the stone. I am so used to working in Limestone and especially Kilkenny limestone that I feel excited and challenged carving a different stone. the red travertine is a very porous stone and needs to be carved gently when I come across the larger pores.
I remember looking at an image of the Inuit Kiss and felt touched by the tender gesture of the 2 foreheads/noses touching. The image and emotion has stayed with me over the years and now I finally get to carve a sculpture with the added baby in an Amauti, (which is a specially designed Inuit Parka with a built in baby pouch located on the back, just below the hood) it is a family tableau which resonates with me very deeply.
I am carving it all with hand tools, the process is slow going but I am enjoying it and hoping the sculpture turns out the way I see it.. But you just never know how it will be.
